در پایان دسامبر سال 2019، یک بیماری جدید که اتیولوژی آن ناشناخته بود در ووهان چین ظاهر شد و به سرعت به عنوان یک betacoronavirus جدید شناخته شد که دارای ارتباط نزدیک با SARS-CoV و تعدادی دیگر از ویروس‌های کرونای مشابه - SARS بامنشا خفاش می­باشد. این ویروس از خفاش‌ها منشاء گرفته و از طریق حیوانات واسطه‌ای‌که هنوز ناشناخته اند در ووهان، استان هوبی به انسان منتقل می­شود. این ویروس به سرعت در کلیه استان­های چین و با همان سرعت در کشورهای دیگر گسترش یافت که موجب آن شد که مدیرکل سازمان بهداشت جهانی در 30 ژانویه 2020 از بابت سلامتی عمومی اظهار نگرانی نماید. این بیماری از طریق استنشاق یا تماس با قطرات آلوده منتقل می‌شود و دوره کمون آن بین 2 تا 14 روز است. علائم معمولاً می‌تواند شامل تب، سرفه، گلودرد، تنگی نفس، خستگی، کسالت و غیره باشد. دراین مقاله شیوع ناگهانی و ویژگی‌های شناخته شده ویروس نوپدید SARS-CoV-2، بیماری بالینی ناشی شده از آن، COVID-19 و خلا‌های مهم در دانش ما از شناخت ویروس و علت‌های بیماری بررسی شده است.
