Cutaneous leishmaniasis is caused by protozoan parasites of the Leishmania genus, primarily Leishmania major (zoonotic) and Leishmania tropica (anthroponotic), which are widespread globally, including in most cities of Iran. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in the Shushtar Health Center over the past fifteen years. This retrospective, cross-sectional study was based on recorded data of suspected CL cases referred to the health center. The data were collected and analyzed. In this center, smears were examined using Giemsa staining and evaluated under a microscope at 100X magnification. Out of 1,163 total samples, 490 cases (43.24%) were diagnosed as positive, of which 286 (58.36%) were male and 204 (41.63%) were female. The highest frequency of CL cases was observed in 2011 (75%) and 2012 (65.96%), while no positive cases were recorded in 2024 (0%). A total of 1,243 lesions were recorded, with 470 (31.90%) localized on the foot, 494 (39.74%) on the hand, 127 (10.22%) on the face, and 151 (12.14%) affecting multiple parts of the body. The relatively high prevalence of the disease and the endemic nature of the region—along with the presence of two key contributing factors, rodent reservoirs and sand flies—highlight the urgent need for the design and implementation of effective control programs.
